It's Hard Out There For a Judge

Even a conservative judge...

The York Daily Record reported that Judge Jones needed U.S. Marshalls to protect him and his family when the verdict in the Dover trial was issued last December.

Pretty incredible (and scary). The YDR article also discusses the wider trend of right-wing demonization of judges and the judicial system.

Jones, a judge with the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, decided to speak publicly about the e-mails this week in light of recent reports about threats of violence against federal judges. He said statements made by "irresponsible commentators and political figures" have gotten so extreme that he fears tragedy.

"We're going to get a judge hurt," he said.

I'm still waiting to hear about a single incident where a secular person has threatened to kill a judge because he or she lost a religioun-based lawsuit.

Anyone? Anyone?

This is not a direct answer to radatheist, but how about the latest Pew poll? Here are the percentages of those who answered that torture is "never" justified:

Catholics- 26%
white Protestants- 31%
white Evangelicals- 31%
"secular"- 41%

Those who identify as "secular" are more Christian than the Christians.

That could be the saddest thing I've ever read. Americans are so calloused to human rights' violations when we're the "good guys" that 1 in 10 people say using torture OFTEN is justified.

What would happen in North Korea made it a point to torture OUR people on a regular basis? When they do it, it's wrong, but when we do it, it's ok?

It's an amazing country that's formed around the right :-(
