"Only" two-thirds of Finns believe in "evolutionism"

Science magazine recently did an analysis of polling on evolution, which found that only 40% of Americans accept that humans evolved from a lower species.

Apparently, NewsRoom Finland was disappointed in the Finnish results in the same analysis:
With only two thirds saying the theory of evolution is a tenable explanation of the origin of species, Finns are more sceptical about evolutionism than people in many other European countries as well as in Japan.

Oh, to have such problems. Our friends at the National Center for Science Education and at Panda's Thumb would be doing cartwheels if 65% of Americans believed in evolution.

Here is Panda's Thumb's take on the new data.

This is too funny. I saw a bumper sticker that said:

"Evolution is the FACT. Natural Selection is the THEORY."

No matter how times you try to explain to non-believers (in evolution) that it does NOT say we "evolved from apes," they just won't listen.

I guess when you look at how many Americans think the earth is only 7,000 years old, and that dinosaurs were on the ark with Noah, it's no surprise they don't buy evolution.

Ahh, to be able to deny reality to the point of absurdity must be such a wonderful talent when you don't want to learn anything!

It says a lot about public education, doesn't it?

Paula J, I while the schools can take some of the blame, they don't deserve all of it. The US has a long tradition of anti-intellectualism, a tradition that exceeds anything ever seen in Europe. And it continues unabated when we have an administration, a Congress, many governors, and scads of school boards who think opposition to evolution is as American as apple pie. And that says nothing about the fundamentalist churches who push this anti-intellectualism from the pulpit every Sunday of the year. You won't see any of that in Europe, so the Finns do have something to worry about.

One of my favorite quotes:

"We would be 1,500 years ahead if it hadn't been for the church dragging science back by its coattails and burning our best minds at the stake."

The point is, science cannot prove truth. Christian's cannot prove beyond a doubt that there is a God and evolutionists cannot prove that we evolved. They are both a THEORY. However, in most school, only evolution is taught.
