Here come the stormtroopers
This is going to set the conspiracy theorists on overdrive, with good reason.

A disturbing recent phenomenon in Washington is that laws that strike to the heart of American democracy have been passed in the dead of night. So it was with a provision quietly tucked into the enormous defense budget bill at the Bush administration's behest that makes it easier for a president to override local control of law enforcement and declare martial law.

Upon reading this in the NY Times earlier today, my stomach churned a bit. Between this, the Patriot Act, other laws passed by the late Republican Congress, and Bush's signing statements, it seems to me that the Democrats have a lot of acts of repeal that need to be taken. If they can't override a Republican filibuster now, then we need to work for an even stronger Democratic Congress in 2008, although i'm very leery of either party gaining too much power, ever.
And still, people keep buying the whole "it's for your own good" act.
What does it take to get people good and truly MAD?!?
